LUPRIT® Products

LUPRIT® stands for proven lubricants and release agents for the hot forming of non-ferrous metals. The products are primarily used in the extrusion of copper, brass, and special alloys.

The focus is on a thin, uniform lubricating film between the tool and the workpiece, which reduces friction, tool load, and adhesion. At the same time, the products support a clean pressing start, stable process control, and a uniform surface of the extruded product.

LUPRIT SP

Lubricant for standard applications in the extrusion of non-ferrous metals, especially brass and copper alloys. LUPRIT SP is suitable for medium application temperatures and supports a uniform lubricating film on the die or mandrel. The goal is a clean pressing start, less friction, and a smooth surface of the extruded product.

LUPRIT SB

Lubricant for higher temperatures, especially in the extrusion of copper and copper alloys. LUPRIT SB is designed for more demanding hot forming processes and ensures good adhesion, clean handling, and stable lubrication even during extended pressing times.

LUPRIT SN

Graphite-free lubricant for special requirements and special alloys. The product is free of “C” and is used when graphite or blackening in the process should be avoided. Suitable for medium application temperatures and processes where a clean surface is particularly important.

LUPRIT WAX Series

Industrial waxes for peripheral processes in metalworking. The LUPRIT WAX Series covers products for thermally loaded sawing and cutting of non-ferrous metals, demolding, and the lubrication of high-temperature transport chains. The waxes are designed for clean, low-residue application.

Product Series: Technical Overview

The LUPRIT product range covers the complete spectrum of lubricant requirements for non-ferrous metal extrusion, drawing, die casting, and associated peripheral processes. Each series is formulated for a defined thermal and mechanical operating window and is available in product grades tailored to specific alloy systems and application equipment.

[SERIES 01]

LUPRIT SP — Solid Lubricant Sticks for Hot Extrusion

LUPRIT SP is a series of solid lubricant sticks for die and mandrel lubrication in copper, brass, and copper-alloy extrusion. The sticks are formulated as a compressed solid matrix of inorganic lubricant carriers—primarily hexagonal boron nitride and/or graphite—with a binder system designed to achieve controlled melting and film transfer under contact with heated tooling.

Application is performed by pressing the stick against the rotating die face or mandrel before the extrusion stroke begins. The binder melts at a defined temperature threshold, releasing the lubricant carrier onto the tool surface as a thin, adherent film. This ensures reproducible coverage without the need for spray equipment or liquid handling systems.

LUPRIT SP grades are available in different inorganic carrier concentrations to suit varying contact pressures and tool temperatures. Stick geometry (diameter, length) is specified to match the automated or manual applicator system in use. Contact PROMET to specify the correct grade for your press configuration and alloy system.

LUPRIT SB — Aqueous Dispersions for Spray Application

LUPRIT SB covers aqueous lubricant dispersions intended for spray application via ring nozzle systems, spray guns, or automated dosing units. The product series is used primarily for container bore lubrication in copper and brass extrusion presses and for die face treatment in aluminium and zinc die casting operations.

LUPRIT SB dispersions are supplied as concentrates for dilution with deionised or softened water on-site. Dilution ratio and spray parameters (pressure, cycle time, nozzle geometry) are specified as part of the product qualification. The carrier system is formulated for stable dispersion without settling over standard storage and dosing cycles.

The SB series includes grades optimised for high-temperature spray applications where rapid water evaporation is required, as well as lower-temperature grades where a longer film persistence is needed. Selection between grades is based on billet temperature profile and press cycle time.

[SERIES 03]

LUPRIT SN — Sulphur-Free Formulations for CuNi and Special Alloys

LUPRIT SN is a range of sulphur-free and halide-free lubricants formulated for alloy systems that cannot tolerate conventional EP (extreme pressure) additive packages. The primary application is copper-nickel alloy extrusion (CuNi10Fe1Mn, CuNi30Mn1Fe), where sulphur contamination leads to intergranular attack and surface embrittlement at operating temperature.

SN grades use inorganic lubricant carriers exclusively. The thermal stability of hexagonal boron nitride at temperatures above 900 °C makes it the primary active component. Formulation chemistry excludes any sulphur-bearing precursors, including antioxidant additives that could generate sulphur under thermal decomposition conditions.

LUPRIT SN products are supplied with a chemical composition declaration suitable for use in alloy qualification documentation. Safety Data Sheets conform to EU Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008. REACh compliance documentation is available on request.

[SERIES 04]

LUPRIT COATING — Surface Barrier Coatings for Billets and Tooling

LUPRIT COATING products are applied as barrier coatings to billet surfaces or heated tooling prior to processing. Rather than reducing friction through hydrodynamic mechanisms, COATING products form a solid, thermally stable layer that prevents direct metal-to-tool contact, suppresses oxidation of the workpiece surface, and provides controlled heat insulation at the interface.

Billet coating prior to furnace heating reduces scale formation, which translates directly to lower crop lengths, reduced die cleaning intervals, and improved profile surface quality. Die coating applications extend the service life of flat and bridge dies in aluminium extrusion by maintaining a stable separation layer throughout the extrusion cycle.

LUPRIT COATING products are available in brush-on, spray, and dip-coating formats. Film thickness and application method are specified based on the substrate geometry and the process temperature profile. PROMET provides film thickness measurement support as part of the qualification process.

[SERIES 05]

LUPRIT WAX — Industrial Waxes for Peripheral Metalworking Processes

The LUPRIT WAX series covers lubrication requirements in peripheral processes associated with non-ferrous metalworking: hot sawing of extruded profiles and tubes, shear cutting of slugs and billets, demolding of cast components, and lubrication of high-temperature transport and conveyor chains.

Each WAX sub-type is formulated for its specific function. SAW WAX provides lubrication and cooling at the saw blade interface without generating excessive smoke under hot-cut conditions. CHAIN WAX maintains lubricating film integrity on transport chains operating in furnace environments where conventional oils would carbonise or drip. FORM RELEASE achieves controlled adhesion to die surfaces to obtain clean part ejection without build-up.

LUPRIT WAX products are supplied as solid blocks, granulates, or liquid dispensers depending on the application method. Consumption rates and reapplication intervals are documented in the product data sheet. PROMET can assist with integration of automated wax application units into existing line configurations.

Custom Formulation

Standard product series cover the majority of lubricant requirements in non-ferrous metal processing. However, specific alloy compositions, unusual process geometries, or strict regulatory constraints may require a formulation not available from a standard catalogue. PROMET undertakes custom formulation development on a project basis.

Development Scope

Custom formulation begins with a technical specification agreed between the customer and the PROMET application engineer. This defines the required operating temperature range, base material restrictions (e.g. sulphur-free, halide-free, heavy-metal-free), physical form (dispersion, stick, paste), and performance criteria (film persistence, residue level, evaporation behaviour).

Laboratory & Validation

Prototype formulations are characterised for viscosity, particle size distribution, melting point, and decomposition behaviour under defined thermal profiles. Laboratory qualification is followed by a controlled process trial at the customer site before the formulation is released for series supply.

Documentation

Each custom formulation receives a unique product designation and a full documentation package: product data sheet, Safety Data Sheet (SDS) per Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, REACh substance declaration, and a change control commitment guaranteeing notification of any formulation modification.

Supply Continuity

Custom formulations are produced at the PROMET manufacturing facility in Weeze, Germany. Batch sizes are defined to meet customer consumption volume with appropriate safety stock. PROMET maintains raw material reserves for critical custom formulations to protect supply continuity across production campaigns.
